blue cactus...red clouds...this just ain't natural.
In David Lynch's "Blue Velvet," I remember the scene where there's a tight, creeping zoom into a severed ear lying in the grass. The ear didn't do much for me, but the grass produced a strange effect...somehow Lynch managed to take an ordinary, everyday image and transform it into a dark, moody, almost menacing force.
For this exhibit I wanted to create that dissonant mood by incorporating strange colors, off kilter angles and using macro lens for the more intimate photographs.
All the images were shot with 35mm film in different parts of the United States, including old growth forest in the Olympic National Forest, giant tropical plants in Hawaii, and spikey cactus in my Mom's backyard in Arizona.
